My truck used to be a three speed on the steering column, but was converted to put the shifter in the floor by a previous owner. The reverse lights do not work, and I was thinking it may have something to do with a Neutral/Safety Switch? Can anyone help me? I have no idea how I would fix this other than to just hook up my reverse lights to a toggle switch.
Welcome to FTE, lot's of good people here.
Hooking up a toggle switch might be the easiest way to "fix" your back up lights.
On a column shifted three speed the switch was mounted at the base of the steering column, in the engine compartment. It was positioned so when the shift arm was raised in the reverse position the arm depressed the switch, turning the lights on.
The switch would need to be moved to the floor shifter and the wires lengthened to reach it.
Some floor shifts come with a bracket to mount the switch some don't. If yours didn't, it probably wouldn't be too much of a job to fab something but like I said, a toggle switch is probably the quickest fix.
Thank yall for the help. It ended up being that the wires from the reverse lights weren't connected to the switch on the transmission. Apparently the previous owner just didn't want to mess with it when they converted it to a manual. But it seems I could've figured this out sooner lol, I feel dumb now. But anyway, just an update, I still have to replace the sockets for the backup lights themselves. They have rusted and aren't allowing the bulbs to get any current. Thank you for replying, I appreciate you

1974 F100 Styleside pickup?
If so, does the taillamp lens attach to the metal body with screws?
1973 F100/350, 1974 F100/350 before serial number T80,001. Sockets are swagged into the metal body.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Or, is the taillamp a one piece molded plastic assembly that the individual plastic sockets twist into the body?
1974 F100/350 from serial number T80,001 / 1975/79 F100/350 / Same taillamps/sockets as 1975/91 Econoline & 1978/79 Bronco.
It's the twist kind. The wire comes out of the body of the truck and then there's a socket for the lightbulb. That socket is mainly plastic and twists into one of the holes in the taillight cover. The metal tabs on the inside of the lightbulb socket rusted off, so it's not making contact with the bulb. Thank you for the info!! It'll give me more options to look at while I'm at the junkyard. There was only one older model truck like mine, and it had the same problem, so I was just trying to find something on the internet. But I'll definitley go back and look at the econoline and bronco selection. Thanks again numberdummy!
