im in need of imediate help, my dad is gonna get rid of my truck if i cant get the reverse lights working, he thinks the only way is too hook them up to a toggle switch in the cab, but i know nothing about electrical stuff, he said he wont help either, so i turn to you, the experts. i was wondering if it had anything to do with the linkage for my trans(c6), everything is bumped to the right one position, instead of P being park, R is, and reverse is N, and so on.
your help would be greatly appreiciated
by the way its a 1978 f250 ranger camper special with a 351m, c6
Your reverse light switch is part of the neutral safety switch which is mounted on the tranny, right where the linkage connects. If your reverse lights are working when your indicator points to "N" (since you say it is one off), then it sounds like you just need to adjust your linkage.
If not, your switch is probably bad (very easy to replace), but you still need to adjust your linkage.
I would check the fuse, the bulbs, and then proceed from there.
With the key in the "on" position (but not running), check the wires for power to the switch.
on my 77 the neutral safety switch is on the steering collum just under then dash....my lights didnt work either when i got my truck....found out that someone yanked the switch, it prolly went bad...check under the dash...if its no there then u can rig a toggle switch between the wires, that what i did, or u can get a new switch and replace it.
I am not sure what the weight is for but all I did was put the tranny in drive. Then loosen the bolt, I had an assistant put the gear selector on the D. Then just tighten the bolt. Done.
If you still want the factory switching...Take the switch off & clean it with lacquer thinner....then with electrical cleaner....then re-install it & make the PROPER adjustment.
If not...then rig up some tractor lights to the bumper from a toggle switch under the dash.
