Does the transmission have to come out to replace the reverse band?
I suppose it would be obvious if I got under it and had a look but I've got a bad back at the moment and I'm just trying to figure out how much work is ahead of me and whether I'll need some help with the heavy stuff.
Yes. The bands can only be accessed by removing the extension housing & oil pump from the front of the transmission to expose the input/output shafts and planetary gears attached to them. You'll have to remove the shafts & clutch packs to access the gears and bands.
Do your research! You will need to measure end play and clutch pack clearances to ensure the transmission goes back together correctly. You'll probably also need some special tools for disassembly/reassembly.
What exactly will need to be done will depend on the year and type of transmission you have, but knowing what you're getting into (and having diagrams available) will save you a lot of hassle.
