in my 1979 f150 4x4 my trans shifts great 1-4 but doesnt go into reverse about 80% of the time. could it be gearwind? the clutch is adjusted properly and the fact that it only shifts somtimes just blows my mind. any ideas/suggestions? thinks!
Np435 - first and reverse gears are not synchronized. Do you come to a complete stop before trying reverse?
Do the gears grind when you try reverse? Have you tried double clutching?
Yep no syncronizers for reverse.
Complete stop and then when it doesn't drop right in, I very slightly release the clutch just a bit to rotate the gears while applying a little pressure on the shifter to drop in the gear. Careful not to let clutch out too much as it'll grind on ya.
If that doesn't work the like Montana says roll forward and try again.
I have tried letting the clutch out a little and shifting, no grinding at all. When I try to shift to reverse it just feels solid like it has nowhere to go. But when it does actually go into gear it's smooth as butter which is why I'm so stumped. We tried rocking it back and fourth, shifting the tcase up and down, clutch adjustment. It's in our mud truck and for example: we load it on the trailer and no reverse, after a two hour drive it shifts into reverse to back it off and after not moving an INCH for an hour or so when we go to stage, no reverse. I just don't get it, thanks for any input!
