My 5th wheel isn't heavy, but it's over 13' high. The weight I was towing had little to do with it.

This happened between Socorro & Belen, NM.

The strong head wind was the biggest factor, then you add the long hard uphill pull, the high temps, and I had the cruise set on about 77.

I didn't notice she was getting hot unitl the fan clutch kicked into high & sounded like a turbo prop beechcraft trying to take flight. That's when I looked down at my gauges and noticed how hot everthing was and that I was running really high amounts of boost just to maintain the speed under those conditions.

God only knows how high the EGT's were... I have no doubt now that they were above 1600* for way too long.

Yeah mine comes in pretty heavy and stands 13'6". I have towed all around the country as well. Usually run around 210 in mid summer for engine temps and 190-200 on the tranny in stock power. But I only run at 65 mph (st tires).

For me it's a matter of what I want to spend., not what I can afford. It's hard for me to justify in my mind dropping two thousand dollars on an investment that will not produce any returns for two/three years.

All I want to do is let my truck breathe.

I used an edge in the low tune setting ( +40 HP) for a year. That included a lot of tows of my 17,000 lb 5er which is as tall as any I know of. I had no problems even pulling over Mount Eagle Tennessee last July 4th with the outside air temp at 110 at the base. The fan never came on. Of course I tow at 60 MPH. IF YOU ARE TOWING A 5er at 77MPH THE TRUCK IS NOT THE PROBLEM. I now have a minni and so far I use the no power settings and the truck runs great. My point is that getting rid of the DPF and doing nothing else will improve the trucks performance a lot.

However the gages are great to have. The stock dash gages are not gages. They will tell you the truck is hot after it becomes hot, same for the tranny. You have no idea what the EGTs are. But, in stock mode the truck should defuel before anything gets over heated to the point it would damage the truck. Key word being SHOULD.

So, get the DPF delete gizmo and a pipe. Later, if you want gages there are a number of ways to get them. I would say you could buy the DPF delete and something to read the OBD real time for less than a new minni cost. Or you can install a set of gages on the pillar like I had on my 7.3L. But, I will also say that whatever you pay for a minni or a Spartan you will recoup when you sell your truck either by raising the price of the tuned truck or by pulling the tuner and selling it on ebay or craigs. Hope this helps.

Hi Brown dog,
I have a question, when you install your (GBZ-FED40) DPF-R FORD 4.0 PLUS PROGAMMER did you remove or install block plates on your EGR?

I completely removed both egr coolers & rear exhaust crossover pipe, rather than band aid egr plates
