I've had an XLT for a few years and have just bought a '97 Limited.
I have a bad back so I can't climb under the car to look properly, does the Limited have self levelling suspension in the back?
The shocks look like airbag types from what I can, the shield is very big, but I can't see any air hoses or any other mechanisms anywhere.
Another thing; on the driver's side arm rest where the mirror controls are there are 3 rectangular shaped holes, it looks like something should be there, the XLT didn't have it.
Load leveling suspension was an option. I'm not sure if all Limiteds had it, it may have been an option. It sounds like yours has it.
Regarding the 3 rectangular holes, any chance you could post a picture of them? Have you looked on the passenger side controls to see if there is maybe a "Limited" badge or something in that same location that is missing from the driver's side?
Those holes appear to be for a 2-person seat memory. The smaller squares were for the "1" and "2" buttons, and the larger rectangle hole looks like the opening for the "Set" button. I don't know if these buttons are just missing from your truck or if that door panel is from a different Explorer/Mountaineer. You might check your owner's manual to confirm this was for seat memory as well as to understand better the load leveling.
Thanks Rod. There's a possibility that switch is inside the door.
At the moment when I use the remote to unlock the door the seat slides all the way forward, which is the exact opposite of where I want it to be.
I've downloaded an owner's manual from the Ford website, I've got a bit of light reading to do.

That's a good sign that your Explorer has the seat memory feature. The manual will explain how to assign a key fob to a particular memory setting. Of course you need those switches on the door to save your settings to memory....
I got the Limited out on the road and turned on the load leveling switch, it keeps cycling even when the ignition is off. I'd say I have a leak somewhere.
