I just purchased a 2000 2wd XLT Ranger, with no owner's manual. How can I tell by the door sticker what rear end I have? Limited Slip Differential, or not?
Thanks 04Edge, that's exactly what I needed. I don't have a limited slip, it's a 4.10. Can't understand why such a low ratio in a 4 cylinder auto. Another thing I've noticed so far, is how stiff and choppy the ride is. But then again, I'm comparing the ride to my 66 F100, which rides like an old Buick.
And speaking of ride, is there any particular Ranger that does ride good? How about the Edge? I'm looking for a big truck ride with small truck economy.
"Can't understand why such a low ratio in a 4 cylinder auto." I like the 4.10 in a 4 or 6 cylinder truck because it gives a little better acceleration and low end grunt than a higher gear, although both are offered. How is your fuel mileage?
Just made a thousand mile trip from Illinois to North Carolina and consistently got 24/25mpg, not bad. I know the 4.10 is a factory original, but wonder what I'd get with a better ratio. Maybe they did this for towing capacity?
What I'd really like to improve is the ride. Never considered softer shocks but that may be the answer. I just figure you have to compromise economy for ride?
By the way, this truck has the best ac I ever saw. You don't even have to turn it on! Unless it's super hot there's no need to turn the a/c on. It blows colder than outside air through the air vents? Is this normal? I also notice condensate when I park. In the NC weather I run around town during on an 80+ day with the fan on low and the ac off!
Hey the 4.10's are way better than the 3.73's amot of rangers came with. They just seem to be a dog with the 3.73's. If not a softer shock to improve your ride you might look into Rancho or Bilstiens adjustable shocks. Gives you the advantage of adjusting the ride the way you like it -
With the 4 banger you really need the 4.10 to give you some get up and go. The AC compressor runs in all positions except floor only and vent only, listen and you'll hear the compressor kicking in.
When My Compressor Kicks In It "drowns" My Truck From Power. For Example When I Have The A/c On And Accelerate The Rpm's Will Be At 3 Grand Then The Compressor Kicks In At They Will Be Under 3 Then Go Back To 3 When It Kicks Off. Whats The Deal? This Is A New Thing. O'yeah My O/d Stopped Working Too, But Thats Posted Else Where So I Can Sob Here. Is This Normal? It's Like This When I Am Stopped As Well. When I Am At A Constant Speed It Won't Do It, Only Under Acceleration Or Idle. Any Insight?
Another Thing....i Just Decoded My 01 2wd Edge Ex-cab 3.0 Truck And It Says That I Have A 3.73 Non-limited Slip Differential. Does This Mean I Have An Open Differential?if So I Beg To Differ! I Couldn't Pull A 3ooo Lb Boat Out Of A Gravel Boat Launch With No Open Differential! I Have The Privelage Of Owning An 01 Xlt 4-banger With 4.10 Non Limited Slip And That Is True To It's Name. That Thing Always Has One Wheel Spinning, My Edge Always Leaves A Posi Trail. I Always Fish Tail Under Heavy Acceleration, especially In Snow And Mud. I'm Not Saying I Have Posi-trac But I Surely Don't Have An Open Diff. Can Someone Please Give Me Some Insight. Thanks!
If you don't want your 4.10 diff then I will gladly swap with you. And I know what you are saying, 01edger. My truck always leaves a posi trail when I gun it, but when I start to get stuck you sure can tell it's an open.
