To start off i have a 2000 F350 that has a 6 position tuner with tw tunes(stock, warm up, 80 eco, 120, 140, and race), gauges(boost, exhaust, trans), 4in turbo back exhaust, 2.5in lift kit, and 35in tires on the truck from when i bought it. The truck had a brand new transmission put in bout 6,000 miles before it and today just left me stranded. The truck never showed any signs of having a transmission issue, the fluid full and not smelling, shifting fine. Today i was driving down the road, the truck seemed like it shifted hard then nothing it all. The gauges read normal, the linkage looked intact. It doesn't matter what i try to shift it into, its just like neutral. I was able to have a buddy bring it to his shop before i had to run out for a meeting, but any ideas of what it could be? There are no leaks, fluid was still bright red with no burnt smell. Could the transmission really be toast just like that?
Thanks in advance.
Park worked fine, i even double check the transfer case, popped right into 4wd, past neutral and back into two. I'm hoping its just 2wd not working on the transfer case and 4wd will work when i see it tomorrow.
If park worked then I would think it could be TC or fluid flow related from loss of pump or filter fell out, but that's about the extent of my guessing and transmission troubleshooting, hence the BTS in my sig.
The first thing everybody says is the torque converter. Why? Is that the only part most people can identify? Usually when a torque converter fails performance drops WAY off for along time before it won't move any longer.
A sudden failure is usually a shaft breaking, or splines stripping, or the pump failing. No matter if it is one of these of the torque converter then result is the same. The trans has to come out and get torn down.
Removing the pan and checking to see if the filter is in place wouldn't be a bad idea, either.
Dang, I was always wanting to get my username switched to DaNg3r0u5p3nGu1n and now it is taken...Another example of "He who hesitates is lost"! Oh, and Mark, do you think it could be the torque converter that is the OP's problem?
Al, I am not even going to ask how you figured "dangerous penguins" from DaNg3r0u5p3nGu1n...I have new appreciation for your genius Al. No I don't like dangerous penguins, but I do like Lyle Lovett's "Penguins"
