Stinky Strikes Six

I "windowed" my dash. I said dash... don't freak out. I am in the middle of remodeling my dashboard... out of necessity. There is now a gaping square hole within arm's length. I have a temporary **** hanging out of the cave, attached to a wire leading down to my PCM. Many of you are already wise to what I'm saying so indirectly.

I have a 6-position TS chip piggybacked on my PCM, with tunes that fit Stinky. This is a temporary arrangement, it was just to see what would happen. While I would never speak against Jody or DP on the forum, I will say one test drive has my finger on the Buck$Zooka trigger... aiming at the Hydra. The decision is not yet chisled into a link in my signature, because I need to run these tunes through my obstacle course to/from work with AE recording. So far, it solved some old issues... and raised some new ones, but I have some great first impressions.
  1. I feel like driving the truck again.
  2. The injector issue may not be put completely to bed yet.
  3. The AIS issue is now at a manageable level.
  4. No smoke in DD tunes. Nada. Zip. Bubkes.
  5. About the same power (stock and boosted HP), but smoother.
  6. Cooler EGTs, and not by just a little bit.
  7. The results are better than my 2 months of tuning by proxy, but Jody might have nailed it in a few hours if I could have had him live-tune it.
This is not an endorsement of PHP tunes (a friend in the area tunes for a hobby, they're his tunes), nor is it a public flogging of DP. It is an experiment on my truck in my environment with my driving habits.

Well I have been pretty quiet Rich, but I will simply wish the best for you and your truck...I couldn't help but feel a little for you, you seemed "broken" and I don't wish that for anyone in the hobby. It can and has "broke" many.

And reps, to your "helper"(edit: couldn't have to spread it around...I'm sure you played a role though!). Hopefully you can see some resolve, whatever may come.

I never once thought about giving up and selling the truck, Stinky is part of the family. We were already familiar with what a joy it is to use him for transportation, but my choices boogered him up and the de-boogering was getting frustrating. I had too many layers of things going on at the same time and each symptom can be mimicked by something else. I was looking at depowering him back to AC/100 stock nozzles... but that's in the rearview now.

Nsaan - The PNW is buzzing about Bill's visit. The Hydra will have a discount while he's in the neighborhood, according to my sources. Thank you for announcing that... the more people that know this kind of stuff, the better.

Hmm, been watching quietly from the corner while all this has been going on. Hope you get Stinky set up the way you want him. as far as the switch in tuners, I seem to remember recommending this about 6 months ago.
Get yourself over to Portland so Bill can fine tune your baby. you'll never look back.

You, and about 12 other members in PMs. I already had everything in place, so I had to see it through. Stinky survived the experiment and I learned a lot that I would not otherwise know now. Man... did I learn a lot. Many truck owners share what they like and dislike, but few understand what's going on in there to make the difference. If a member had said "Watch out for X tuner because Y values exceed Z limits", that's objective data. When a member says "My truck ran like crap on X tuner and it ran fine on Y tuner", I can't know if it's the truck, the environment, the supplies (fuel and oil), the driver's habits/judgement, or the tunes. My AE and scrutinizing eye told me what I needed to know to make the call for Stinky. I can't divulge too much because that would compromise closely-guarded techniques the different tuners use. Stinky still has a running issue, even with these "better" tunes - details to be revealed when I verify the root cause.

I'll say just one thing on the topic that I can't bite my tongue on any longer: For those with DP tuner or going to DP - pick the 60e over the 80e. I really hate the idea of publicly saying anything negative, but I can't promise I won't repeat this recommendation in the future.

Yeah, the DP 80e was not good for me. 60E seems better.

Or.... I could go there. I want to take my wife to Bryce Canyon and a few other spots in your spectacular state. We are blessed in the West, you can't go anywhere without stumbling onto humbling scenery.

That gave me a thought. Car clubs go for jaunts from Seattle to Wenatchee, Leavenworth, or Chelan all the time. A diesel version of a car club might involve a trip with longer legs... like Portland or Seattle to Salt Lake (and back). That stretch from Boise to Ogden would break the cobwebs on the right side of gauges, though. I don't know why Idaho even spends money on speed limit signs along I-84.

Colossally stupid question: I can train people how to use a PC, I can download programs into my DP, and I can diagnose a truck with AE... but the TS has one friggin' **** - and I don't know how to use it.

Until I know better, I've been starting in each tune, but not switching on the fly like I did with the DP. Is this the procedure?

It is switch on the fly. You can change, start, everything the same way.

OK. You know, the **** is just hangin' there because it's a loaner. I can hardly wait until I try to shift on the fly. I have to reach through the steering wheel with my left hand while I'm driving, turn the **** with my right hand while I count clicks, and try not to bump the shifter into neutral or crash into traffic. I dunno... maybe my procedure has merit.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly on that. I'm gunna go drive... because it's fun again.

You'll get used to counting, or likely just leave it in a tune the same way you used to. Mine stays in a 100 tune nearly 99% of the time, even towing my camper through the hills, and curves of the boston mtns.

You can buy/or make, indicators for the positions, if you wanted btw. Enjoy your drive, Rich!
