P0741 code and limp mode
I erased the codes and took it for a run a couple miles down the road. The wrench for limp mode came back on but the truck was driving OK (not like in limp mode) but the P0741 code came back.
Prior to this I had some rough shifting going back a year or so but no issues issues other than the rough shifting between 1st and 2nd. I have been meaning to have the transmission reprogrammed but haven't got to it.
My question is what are my next steps? Should I take it to the dealer to have the tranny reprogrammed? Should I change the fluid? I have read that this code is likely a stuck solenoid - should I remove this? Is there a way to verify its operation? Other suggestions?
Thanks
I would most definitely take it back to the dealer and have it checked out. I hope you come back and let us know your results on whatever repair you choose if any is needed.

i'd take it in ASAP. sounds like the TCC might have an issue. hopefully you are under warranty?

I took the truck into my mechanic instead of the dealership since I trust this guy and have been dealing with him for 15 years. He said that something was very wrong in the tranny and towed it to his go-to transmission shop.
Turns out I have a 6R80 transmission and they are a piece of crap. Tranny shop owner said the torque converter was shot. Completely burned out. He said that at 125,000 KM there was no excuse for a transmission to blow out a torque converter like that.
Turns out you can't buy the parts anywhere in Canada or the US for the torque converter except for from Ford. A new torque converter from Ford is $3500. Used parts were scarce but he found a used one in Texas (I'm in Ontario). Haven't got the bill yet but I suspect to be north of $3000.
Both my mechanic and the transmission specialist both said that Ford was screwing their customers for not fixing these for free due to poor design.
I'm now concerned that I may have to put another transmission in down the road since I had planned to keep this truck for at least 10 years. I might trade it in even. I drive this truck for hours in the north where I may need power towing a medium trailer and using 4x4. I can't image a transmission blowing out the transmission 60 miles down a logging road. Not fun.
Should I take this truck to Ford to have the transmission software upgraded?
To be quite honest, i don't think the 6r80 is a bad design, but rather suffers from bad programming. as near as i can tell, the GM 6L80 is nearly identical and both are a ZF design, which for the most part is highly regarded.
to hear that a TC clutch was burned out with that kind of mileage is not particularly surprising to me. I have watched my tachometer on my 2010 and counted a full 3 seconds for it to lock completely. this is not a recipe for longevity... again, IMO.
i'd look at aftermarket tunes for the transmission. 5-star is highly regarded on this sight. I'd give him a call and tell him what happend and what you'd like it to do differently. as i understand it, if one of his normal tunes doesn't do what you want, then he can make a custom for you.
i'm sorry to hear about your troubles, hopefully this is the last major trouble you will have with your truck!
