Might as well get a SCT X-cal 2 from LIPD you can read codes with it and it also conviently comes with some kick a$$ tunes. Its a win win situation IMO.
SCT is iffy on the code reading/diagnostic part. Predator is lots better for diagnostics than SCT but their tunes suck. I really don't know what the best code reader out there is for the diesels. I've heard scangauge II is OK. I'm sure some of our other members will chime in shortly.
Welcome to FTE lots of good people and info around here.
Here are links to three major brands and choice of code readers, all will work, some have more features than others. Read about them and ask questions of there tech support, then choose the model you feel most comfortable with.
the auto x-ray is a pretty good unit & works well to continously clear pcm codes on duramax's so they can travel over 45 mph, but your thumb gets very tired from constant clearing, I have several different professional scan-tools but the little auto x-ray goes in my tool box with me its just the easiest to use on just abought every vehicle.
I run the ScanGauge ll in my truck, mainly for the digital gauges it has that my truck did not come with from the factory (current MPG's and TPS). The ScanGauge works great as a scan tool as I have scanned and cleared trouble codes on my brothers Windstar and my moms Taurus.

I've been thinking about this as well. I read some posts that seem to indicate people are using PDA's to pull codes.
I assume there some application and interface cable you can buy. Anybody have details like what type of PDA & where the appropriate software & i/f cable can be bought ?

The link i posted above for "autoenginuity" there software works on your laptop, pocket PC or Palm.
I've had a Scanguage for years and it's been great for reading and clearing codes as well as monitoring engine functions and mpg's. I keep it hooked up in the vehicle all the time. I think I paid about $100 for mine but they have a new slimmer version and it's a bit more.
