I hate to ask this but my experience with this truck is very limited to say the least. But, I have a 99 F-350, 7.3L, 4WD and the speedometer quit working, ABS light is on, and the overdrive light is flashing. The Ford dealer told me they needed to replace the VSS to trouble shoot the problem. I have replace the sensor in the differential with no results. I purchased a vehicle speed sensor which supposedly is installed in the transmission but I can't find where this sensor is at. The picture is the one I purchased but again I cant find one like it on the transmission / transfer case. Help please.
It doesn't really seem to at all. I have looked all over it and traced wires and can't find anything that resembles that sensor. I will keep looking to see where I am going wrong.
The one that you showed is the older style back when they still
had a cable to run the speedometer. It would of gone onto the tail-shaft
housing of the transmission or transfer case on the 4X4.
Check the plugs and wiring up into the harness for any damage.
The other thing to look at would be your front wheel sensors and
see if you have a bad one. Also I would find a new dealership
they should be able to pinpoint that without having to replace the part.
Someone is being lazy IMHO. One other thing to check is if there was any other
work done to the truck. Look around where the work was done. If no work
was done did it come one all of a sudden? Did ANYTHING happen before?
Where you are going wrong is that there is no vehicle speed sensor on your transmission. You'll never find one no matter how long and hard you look. The two sensor you have shown above are the turbine speed sensor (TSS) and the output speed sensor (OSS.) Neither one reports vehicle speed.
The ONLY VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is on the rear axle. A code for a VSS doesn't necessarily mean that the sensor is bad, it means the PCM doesn't see the signal. Quite often the problem is a damaged wire between the VSS and the PCM.
Thank you for that information. That is very helpful. I have seen some threads that give directions on tracking down wire/signal problems that should help isolate the problem. But at least now I can quit looking for a speed sensor that does not exist.
