Once we get the 7.3 ready for start, the concern is what about prelubing the engine? With gas engines you can turn the oil pump with a dummy shaft to lube things up. With the oil pump on the crank for the 7.3 it is impossible to prelube unless you turn the motor over which kind of defeats the purpose. Biggest concern is the injectors as they need high pressure oil. Will the injectors be ruined if the high pressure pump takes a bit to build pressure? Thought was to disconnect the wiring harness to the injectors, roll the engine over to build pressure then plug the harness back in. Any suggestions? Do I even need to be concerned?
When engine is completely rebuild and you are ready to add the oil, fill the HPOP resevoir (sp) first. Fill it to about 1/2 inch below the fill plug. The resevoir is located right in front of the engine and the fill plug is right on top just to the right of center. Than add the rest of the oil to the engine in the normal manner.
When you're ready to start her up, make sure your electrical connections are all hooked up. Check everything over twice.
When I first went to start my new engine, I failed to notice that my DP tuner switch wire had pulled out of the PCM. I cranked and cranked for a long time until I decided something wasn't right and found the wire unplugged. After I plugged it back in, it started up in a split second. Ran like a dream!
Make double sure you've filled all fluids too. Transmission fluid, power steering, coolant, and of course motor oil.
Every 7.3 engine ive done ive always put about 3 gal of oil in the pan, fill th hpop res, and fill the oil rails, unplug the 42 pin connector and turn the engine over 10 sec, fill the hpop res and keep repeating until the hpop res atays full and you read oil pressure on your dash guage. Then reconnect the 42 pin plug and it should start up easily with the oil system primed.
Fill with oil - including HPOP reservoir and crank'er up. It will not fire until there is 500psi of ICP and that requires a fair bit of cranking. There will have to be LPO pressure well before that so everything will be 'pre-lubed' before it starts.
