Which wire do I need to cut and connect to the trans connector? is it black and white?
also-all I have to do is just find the wire, cut it, and place both ends on the separate terminals?
i mean i put a manual trans in and now i want to hook the reverse lights up to it (so they work auomaticaly) is it just one ofthe plugs i pulled off the auto trans before that i plug onto the manual?
No, the auto trans has a multifunction switch on it called the MLPS. Has starter safety and reverse light switches in it as well as a position encoder for the shift lever.
The manual trans should have just a plain ol switch on it for the reverse lights. Usually on the side, and has 2 terminals. Just take your reverse light wires and connect them to that switch. Of course the harness connector from the auto trans won't work, you'll have to solder the manual trans connector in or use spade terminals.
Or better yet, if you can find a complete transmission harness for the new trans you installed, it just might plug right in to the chassis harness on your truck. Probably not much to it, it should just be the reverse light wiring on a manual trans harness.
ok i understand this, but what colour wire are the reverse lights on??
and its a 2 pole switch, so im assuming its 1 wire, that needs to be cut and the two ends placed onto each respective terminal??

I don't know the wire colors. I ASSumed you were working on a late model with an E4OD since you didn't say otherwise. Get an EVTM (Electrical/Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual) for your year/model truck, or maybe someone on here would be kind enough to give you the diagram if you can tell us what you're working on. What trans did the truck have originally?
As for a 2 pole switch, I think you mean a single pole switch with 2 terminals.
Once you get a schematic for your old auto trans, take the wires that run thru the existing reverse light contacts and connect them to the switch on the new trans. That's all there is to it.
It appears Ford has used the same wire colors for that circuit for quite some time. I cross-referenced a 1986 EVTM diagram with my 1992 EVTM they both list the same color scheme. I would assume that a 1991 model would follow suit.....
Purple/Orange is the Backup Lamp circuit supply feed that leads to one side of the backup up lamp switch. The Black/Pink wire then goes to the backup lamps. Which in turn have the other side of the filament tied to ground.
This diagram for a 1986 Bronco is relatively close for what to look for:
RLA do you have a bigger verson of that pic?i cnat make it out its too blurry when i enlarge it
NVM i do see it now. jus thad to look a lil harder.
i dont know why im having such a hard time with this, Im assuming the auto trans had a connector in which there was a prong where the purple and orange wire went to, and then according to RLA, it turns into a black with pink wire coming out of the connector? so would i find this wire or connector in the bunch of connectors that came off the auto trans?
i do apologize for my ignorance.
everytime i have free time its already dark, wet and snowy here and I hate getting under the truck in this weather searching for wires lol
The diagram above is for a manual transmission equipped truck. As noted before the Purple/Orange wire is the power feed leading into the Backup Lamp Switch. The other side of the switch leading out of the switch is the Pink/Black wire. This continues on to the backup lamps.
These same wires would have been part of the bundle that made up the Neutral Safety Switch/MLPS as noted before.
I need to know what wired feed the backup lamps in an automatic truck
As I noted before the wire colors are very similar between model years. I posted a diagram for manual transmission vehicle for reference. The wire colors should remain the same regardless of what transmission the truck has as far as I can tell.
What I did when I converted mine was to get the wiring harness to the manual trans from the donor truck. It plugs right in place of the E4OD harness and then you don't have to trace any wires.
hey so im looking at the mlps sensor wiring, and i see the black with pink, but only 1 of those. Do i take the black wire off the old sensor and put it on one side of the manuals reverse switch, and the black with pink to the other terminal?
+12V is supplied on the Purple/Orange wire. This wire goes to one side of the Backup Switch. The other side of this switch is where you attach the Pink/Black wire. This wire continues on to the backup lamps.
If you do not have those wire colors then I cannot help you. My EVTM manuals and other online references state those are the wire colors associated with the Backup Lamp circuit.
