Wait To Start Light!

I know that the amount of time the glow plugs are on is by temperature. My truck could be cold or hot and that light stays on for the same amount of time (which is around 10seconds). Shouldn't the light only come on for a second if the truck is already at operating temperature? The truck is a 1988 7.3.

Nope, both mine will cycle the plugs after it is warmed some. As long as they don't keep cycling you are o.k. WTS should stay on longer when it is real cold out though. I get about 10 sec. in warm weather, and 15 to 20 when it is really cold.

So the light is suppose to stay on for 10 secs (glow plugs on) when starting a hot engine? Shouldn't the light only go on for a split second considering they are not necessary on a hot engine?

When my truck is completely warm I don't think it stays on as long, but I could be wrong. It is not something i pay much attention to since I know she's warm. It definitely will stay on for a full cycle if I am not at normal op temps though. As long as the GPC is shutting them down after starting I don't think you have a problem.

Mine is only on for like a second if the engine is warm. At least I think its like that, like macgyver said, if I know its at operating temp, like just hopped out for 5-10 minutes, I'll just crank it over in one smooth turn without waiting.

Ya that is what I figured, do you think there is wire or connection causing the controller not sense that the engine is warm

mine is the same way bgab3. my friends truck only glows for a second or two when warm and i have seen one other 7.3 idi that only flashed the light upon restart when warm. people rave and rave about the 7.3 style glow plug system but i think it's a POS. it is supposed to measure the amount of heat in the cylinder by reading the resistance of the glow plug. why make it so much more difficult than it needs to be. they already have the controller(the brains of the thing), they should have just tapped into one of the three coolant temp sensors and have it so when the coolant temp is above say 160*F then don't run the plugs. in my mind that is just un-needed wear and tear on the plugs when it runs them when engine is warm

when my engine is warm they will glow for 10-15 seconds. i even replaced my controller trying to figure this thing out but that didn't do anything. all my glow plugs are good(ZD9's) and the wiring harness is good as well. i do know that my factory coolant temp gauge always reads cold...........

Thats the reason I switched to the manual button. Why run the plugs in the warm months when the engine can be shutdown for hrs. and fire back up at the touch of the key.

I checked the 94 today after my drive home, and at full operating temp the WTS still stayed lit for 8 sec.

I could be wrong, however i think the newer style 7.3 gp c,uses it's own temp senser to get warm start delay time ...the gp c allso reduces time when one or more gp's are bad..based on operational curent or voltage. the relay mounted on top of the controler is nonspecific to the circut and is replaceable...if one decids to eliminate the controler, the wife or her boyfriend could easyly cook off your gp's ..my.02
