The WTS is on for short period while the glow plugs (GP) are active. The GPs can stay activated for about two minutes. The WTS light will be off well before then.
There does seem to be a bit of difference when the outside temps start dropping, though. When the weather is warmer, the WTS light may only be on for a few seconds. Either way, warm temps or cold temps, the GPs can be active longer than the WTS.
If you're concerned about the GPs not be active long enough, when the WTS light goes off, wait another 60 seconds before attempting to start the engine.
What MooseMan said. Also you can watch your volt/battery/charging meter. You will/should hear a click when the light goes off but no movement in the meter for another minute or 2.
I have noticed when it is nice and warm/hot outside my light only stays on for a second or two.
thanx to everyone for the quick response i was having problems starting for sometime now and starting thinking about when i had my 06 f350 6.0 the glow plug light stayed on longer than my 97 f350 7.3 the wait to start gos off in jsut a few seconds iam talking 2-4 and thats when i would try and crank and haveing the starting problems now i wait a good30-40 seconds and she fires right up i also notice that when my rear or front tanks are half full it has the starting problem then if i switch over to one or the other when full i dont have any problems any ideas on what might cause this maybe the fuel selector valve is sticking???????? thanx again to everyone an btw IDMooseMan yes i live in victorville

I was stationed at George Air Force Base from '88 - Closure in '92. My family and I lived in Apple Valley for awhile before moving to Idaho.
i live right off of bear valley behind the mall lived in altadena all my life then bought a house up here about seven years ago i like it in the high desert do you do any hunting in idaho?
Yea, the WTS light has no bearing on the Glow Plugs.
So, if the WTS light goes out, the computer thinks its warm enough to start, even though the GPs are still working.
If you are having trouble starting after the light goes out, then you probably have some bad GPs or some wiring issues on the GP's
I have some bad GP's, they have gotten worse since i got home. Truck starts a little rough on a few cylinders and blows some white smoke.
no white smoke on start up but i did find a craftsman open end wrench on top of the cps i guess the guy i purchased the truck from forgot he was working on the cps at one time or another do you know if ford will charge me for this even though its on recall
Did you check to see if the CPS bolt was tight?
Kinda creepy the wrench was still there.
Better check the FPR screen also.
If you were to get poor fuel pressure to the injectors, the motor needing to warm up longer to fire off less fuel, or not fuel in all the cylinders might cause the poor startup.
