Engine already warmed but forgot to wait

Once in a while, I would forget to wait for the "wait" indicator light to start my PSD although the engine is already warmed up. Usually, I turned of the engine and run inside a store to buy something. When I got out, I just started the engine.

How bad is this?

No biggie. If the engine is already warm the computer may not have even switched the glow plugs on. The WTS light will come on weather the glow plugs do or not.

I'm in California, and nowadays it never gets cold during the day. So you guys are giving the okay to not wait for the WTS signal when the engine is already warmed/hot?

Don't the glow plugs stay on for a couple of minutes in cold weather? The WTS light goes out even though the plugs are still heating. You can/could start the truck as soon as the light goes out.

Is it about waiting for the plugs to come up to temperature before lighting if off?

Don't mean to hijack the thread... Thanks

The plugs will be on from 0 to 120 seconds depending on the PCM inputs. The WTS light will always self test for a minimum of 5 seconds even if the glowplugs are not on.

In SoCal in the spring...probably the only time you need to wait is on a cold engine...and it will start just fine if you don't. I'm not giving an ok, I don't know enough about how they react with a running engine...I always wait no matter how hot it is, just saying that yours probably are not on all that often.

The way I see it is by the time Im done fastening my seat belt The glow light is usually gone or really close to gone. I think thats a good starting ritual and fixes early starts.

the owners manual says, you do NOT have to wait for the wts light to go out before starting the engine. the pcm will turn the glow plugs on as it sees a need to...they are not in the same circiut as the light, meaning that light will go off and the pcm will still control ( cycle ) the glow plugs as needed. the only time mine has failed to start right up is when temps are below 20 degrees, then i stop cranking and wait for the plugs to heat up and she cranks up. the fire, ems, and delivery sevices use these engines and they are started repeatedly without waiting. you will not hurt a thing by doing this...the owners manual gives you the "ok". like the saying goes, " kick the tires and light the fires!"

So, how many of you find yourself sitting there waiting for something to happen before starting a gasser? Every time I get in my wifes car it takes me a few seconds to realize I don't have to wait! DOH!!!!

I always do that in the GF's car, and my old tempo

My parents truck is white, and a 5 speed. my '96 is white and an auto, so I alays get in the '96 and go to hit the clutch, only to nail my foot onto the floor .

westladog, its 40* out now and if the engines warm I just cranker, no wait at all. never had a problem unless its realy cold out.

I've got 203,750 miles on my 01 7.3 and I have NEVER, Not One time waited for the WTS light to go off. I just get crank it up and go. I live in Southeast GA. and it rarely gets below 25 degrees!! even if the glow plugs went out I dont think I would replace them!! I've got 4,950 miles on my 05 6.0 and it's getting the same treatment!!

I can't agree with you on that. When I met my wife she showed up in a diesel truck on our first date. There's something about a fine young woman sitting behind the wheel of a large diesel truck that really "trips my trigger". OH-BABY! It was a standard 4X4 to boot!

What I don't understand, with a warm engine, is that the glow plugs keep on heating for a minute plus after starting the engine. To me that's a waste of electricity and wear and tear on the glow plugs. I thought I saw a thread on over riding the computer so it would not do this!?
