Pull a Steering Wheel

Hello - has anyone on here pulled the steering wheel off, mine is a 2003, without using a steeering wheel puller? It looks like a big torx screw holds it on the column spindle, and maybe a whack with a hammer would move it??

I just got my new rosewood and leather wheel - very pretty - and want to swap it with my old one.

I need to follow the pulling steps in this thread I think? Any advice???

I haven't, and I can tell you, it would be very difficult, especially if it has been on since new. Autozone, etc. may rent you one to use, or you could try to make one up. All you need is three bolts/nuts/big washers and some sort of stiff bar.

So I rented the one at autozone, the ford frame doesn't come with holes to thread the bolts in, so it is a balancing act and a nut and washer required to pop it off. PITA to do and took me 25 more minutes than it should have.

I hear you there. I've done it enough times now that I'm quick at it, but it does take some time and more than it should. I actually put a squeeze clamp around the bolts to hold them together/around the frame. Of course the whole thing falls apart and drops down once it pops loose, but it saves a lot of struggling.

Pulled mine off in an hour the first time and 20 minutes the second time. Not that hard to do. Troubleshooting a radio control problem. Just be sure the shorting bars for the air bag connectors are in place when you disconnect them. I would assume if the two pins are shorted, it could blow the other air bags. Not sure. Just a SWAG.
