Anybody ever ran into the situation where the threaded puller bolt holes are stripped out? I am playing with my 78, and trying to get the wheel off to put in a new turn signal switch. One of the holes you thread a puller bolt in to is stripped. I think its either attempt to drill it out and tap it to the next size bigger, or carefully weld a nut in over top of the stripped puller hole. Thanks in advance for any advice.
That's probably the best solution to get it removed; or if the steering wheel is toast; I just tack weld the puller bolts to the stripped hole; then once removed cut of the heads of the bolts and slide the puller of the old steering wheel.
Other option is remove the entire column from rag joint back; and screw the 15/16 nut onto the steering wheel rod to protect the threads; then take a hammer and wack the nut with the steering wheel supported on a table or so; and allowing the column to dislodge from the steering wheel; Had to do it this way once or twice before in a salvage yard to remove a good colunm from a crappy steering wheel.
i always enjoy the yank real hard and hit your self in the chin with the wheel method.
Almost broke my nose with that method years ago, glad to see I'm not the only one.
As far as removal goes, you can wrap the spoke of the wheel with a rag to prevent marking the steering wheel and while pulling up on the oposite side hit the wrapped spoke with a plstic hammer a coule times in as close to the center on the wheel as possible, leave the nut on a couple turns to prevent the wheel from hitting you in the face. This has always worked well for me, I usually find my streering wheel puller the day after I needed it.
