Can someone confirm the size of bolt required for puller to remove steering wheel please. My research found 5/16 - 24. Just want to be sure before I drive all the way to town, thanks.
Tried pulling steering wheel and someone had bolts broken off where puller screws in. I think I have a challenge ahead of me. Never had one this tough.
Spray some penetrating oil into something to catch it and then dab it around the splines with a toothpick, while you run in to grab the bolts it should have some time to soak in. That might help loosen it.
If you can't use a puller on it , try loosening the nut till there is 3 or 4 threads left holding it, use a plastic or rubber hammer and give it a couple hits under the wheel and as close to the center as possible while pulled up on the wheel with your free hand. This has worked well for me in the past , the first time ( 25 yrs ago or so) I didn't leave the nut on and almost ate the wheel when it let go, and no it didn't damage the wheel.
I have taken many off, and never seen anything like this. The po must have tried removing it in the past. Both the holes for threading the bolts for the puller had broken bolts in then. I had to drill them out and use a screw extractor. Not fun. Had a hell of a time getting it off, never had a problem before. Was like it was rusted on!

I know this is counterintuitive but when you have it soaking in penetrant, tighten the main nut holding it on - that helps break the corrosion holding it in place. Tighten, loosen, use the puller... eventually it will work loose. I'd be careful with the rubber mallet method - have removed a lot of wheels like that in the past but you are dealing with 40 year old plastic here. Might work, but you might crack something with an ill-aimed hit.
