I was doing some work to get ready for my flexplate swap, and when I disconnected the transmission cooler lines the ATF that dripped out had a greenish-gray color. My truck has the original cooler, so it isn't antifreeze contamination.
I have seen ATF get dark and smell burnt, but never turn green. The truck has 206,000 miles and the transmission has been shifting fine, but I have only been driving it for about 6 weeks.
I'm going to change the fluid after the transmission goes back in, but is there anything else that should be looked at? Has anyone ever seen this type of discoloration?
I'm not sure if the Scheafers is green for ATF, but it is for the oil.
I had oil draining the other day when I changed some in my fathers truck and it looked blood red coming out even though it was black and... well way over mileage.
Not sure if you get it over there but I use Castrol Transmax 'Z' ATF in my 4R100, Steering and Transfer case.
It is a distinctive 'Green' in colour.
It was excellent when I flushed out the original dino Red coloured fluids. As soon as no Red showed and nice clean Green started to flow, I new I'd done a good flush out and only had the Fully Synthetic ATF in the system.
It is Castrols recommended fluid for the 4R100 Trannys out here in Aussie.
It's good stuff.
How many miles on the fluid, and what kind of driving do you do? Towing, etc...
206K on the odometer, don't know when it was last changed (if ever). It's an F350 4X4 DRW former ambulance that I converted into a utiltiy body. 12.5K GVWR, no towing.
