My 84 Ranger 2.8 V-6 had the WORST of both worlds...............A first gen EEC with first gen TFI, all working through a computer controlled feedback 2150a carb.........yech!
Going BACK to the old "obsolete" duraspark made the truck run FAR better than stock.
The Duraspark was one of fords better ideas. The TFI that replaced it was a piece of crap. The first Gen had the module mounted on the dist, WRONG! They had a bad habit of getting too hot and quit working. The later models had the module mounted remotely mounted on the fender. The Duraspark was damn near bulletproof
I got sooo tired of screwing around with the early TFI systems. I'd get a call for one of my towtrucks, and when we got there the damn thing would start right up. The module would get warm and cutout, then it would cool off and restart. That is why they moved it to the fender........

Yeah, my TFI got cooked at about 6,000ft up in the Steens Mountains...........Yeah, that was a long walk to the next deer camp, and a embarrassing ride in a chevy to Burns to the NAPA store, then the long equally embarrassing ride back to the rig to reinstall the new unit in "less than primitive" conditions.
NEVER will I own another Ford product with the dist. mounted TFI.
That is a Duraspark. It is just as good as the $$$ aftermarket ones. I agree with Dave, go to NAPA and get a rebuilt for a lot less than the aftermarket units.
