Hello:
My '81 F100 has rust on the chrome front bumper. I have removed most of it with steel wool. There is pitting.
Can I get decent results by spray painting with a can of paint, or should I just leave it the way it is?
Can rusty chrome bumpers be brought back to looking good, or must they be replaced?
Your best bet is to leave it for now. Paint doesn't stick to chrome very good. It requires a bunch of prep. If you want it painted in the future, it'll cost more, at least if you want it done right.
You could also look for a factory painted one and use that.

OK. I might get the truck painted in the future. I will leave the bumper until then. It looks "OK" since I got the obvious rust off.
Thank-you very much for reply.
Well after reading all about it here and out on the web, I couldnt resist any longer and had to give the coke method a try.
As i'm sure you've all read, the process is simple: wad up aluminum foil into a ball, dip it in coke, scrub rust off your chrome. Well for anyone wondering if it actually works, I'm here to tell you it does!
I got these results today in about 20 minutes. Hope this is helpful!
My guess is that the Coke method winds up plating aluminum from the foil into the rusted areas, thereby preventing it from rusting again quickly. But, I would also guess that it doesn't last very long if left outside in the elements, so you might have to do it again, and again, and again. However, for the price............
