Well, i was adjusting my front bumper just today, and i saw how the chrome flaked and a lot of little rust spots in all the surface (not that i haven't noticed before). I guess my question would be: what can i do to make them look nice again? will i need to have them chromed again? (i won't, as i plan to replace them as soon as i have funds). What can be done in the meantime?.
There has been a few times my truck has gotten a couple of rust spots on the bumper. Just take some good chrome polish and try that. It has always worked for me, I have this stuff called X-treem polish, it's in a black jar.
hey. ive used a product called naval jelly. it will take the rust spots away. it's a rust remover. it says not to use it on chrome on the label for some reason. ive used it many times on chrome with out any problems.
If the chrome is good, you could try some extra fine steel wool. I have used this on dull truck mirrors and on semi bumpers. It doesn't work too good on flaking chrome. Not much does. The bumper on my 91 has some dull spots. I have thought about sand blasting the bumper and painting it.
If the chrome has indeed flaked away as you mentioned then there is nothing more you can do other than preventing the rust from getting worse in those areas. If you keep some wax or other type of polish on there it can keep the rust from spreading. For the rest of the chrome use 0000 steel wool and wd-40. spray the bumper then let the steel wool work it's magic. Once you have cleaned the whole bumper use some surface prep cleaner and clean the bumper till the rags show no more containments. Next apply a good chrome polish like mothers. You will be amazed how much better it will look.
Ya you can rub till you have wore out your arm and shoulder, or call around (even the dealers and call a few cause right parts guy may give trade cost) a re-chromed bumper isn't that expensive, or that hard to change.
