Ill be replaceing my steering box soon and was thinkin about getting a rebuilt one from NAPA. My truck currently has manual steering and I was gonna convert it to power steering, as far as I know the two boxs mount up the same. Any other place I should consider getting a steering box from? My truck is a 78 F100 2wd and has a 300 inline 6. Thanks in advance.

If I recall correctly, the steering column is shorter.
Redhead Steering gear in Seattle, WA is the best place to get a rebuilt steering box.
I thought about doing that. Elaborate on the jeep cherokee? Will the box off a jeep cherokee bolt up?
you would need to look at the box. Might not be too far off, but the PS pump, pressure, and return lines are gonna be your biggest challenge and those should match up from the cherokee.
I bought a rebuilt steering box for my '79 from Napa several years ago. It works fine, but I didn't know about Redhead at the time. Had I known about them, I would have gone that route. "Rebuilt" steering boxes from most parts stores are just painted and sealed; nothing internally is actually rebuilt. They can have a lot of slop in them still. I think I just got lucky.
I just got my steering box rebuilt by Red Head Steering, and I have to say, those guys do NOT mess around! I mailed them my box on a Thursday night, they had it Friday morning, had it built by Friday night, and i had it back on Monday afternoon.
They not only rebuild the box, they improve it.......the sector shaft on these boxes is the weak link because they rub against the casing, and can form stress cracks. So, the guys at Red Head bore the box out, and install needle bearings around the sector shaft so that it will turn smoothly without rubbing on anything.
Granted, they're not dirt cheap, but they do it right. The rebuilds by A1 Cardone have new seals, and not much else from what I've been told.
Before I went to Red Head, I searched the internet for reviews on their work, and it seems that most everyone swears by them. Might be the best bang for the buck.

If its not too bold of a question how much did it cost to have your box rebuilt by red head?
Oh man .... there was just a group buy here on FTE for Red Head Steering boxes Dec 3rd - 5th. Last count, 43 got in on it, they even let one guy participate and enjoy the $60 savings early today the 6th. It was started by a member with an Excersion but was open to any with a Ford.
In my case, '77 F-150 4X4 w/ps was $326 plus refundable core charge $150 and $35 shipping to me = $510 minus $60 group buy discount = $450 on my card and then I'll mail my orig box back for a core refund using a large "if it fits it ships" USPS box with insurance ($15+5=$20) (up to $470 cost now) for a refund of $150 on my card means total costs to me $320.

I was expecting to spend around $400, if I do go with red head ill have them rebuild the manual steering box. From the way it looks they are well within my budget. Thanks
'78 F-100 2WD Power Steering box .... look at post #48 about page 8 I think ... core charges varied with unit desired. As I recall, this was a partial listing .... any not listed just call them. They have a large inventory of already built units, I called Monday the 3rd and my new box arrived Wed the 5th before 3pm and I live in Va. I'm sure they'ld have the PS box you want and still take your man box as a core if you like thougfh core allowance migfht be adjusted somehow?
