Ive looked at the column and can't see where there is a removable collar to get at the shift light. Looks like there are three separate peaces all of which need the steering wheel takin off to remove them. Btw trucks a 1979 f150 with tilt. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.
You need to remove the steering wheel to replace the bulb. The socket is like the ones in the instrument cluster and it's at about the 1 o'clock position in the turn signal switch.

Ahh ok. That makes sense. Will try and tackle this tonight after work. Thanks again.

Was this changed at some point? At first I thought the bulb was part of the turn signal switch, just like you show above. When I look up a switch for a '73, it shows that. When I look up a switch for a '79 though, it shows it coming off a pigtail that hangs free from the switch. That's why I recanted my original statement after ranger429 chimed in.
Maybe I need to go out and look at mine before talking out of my @$$

Maybe you're correct, the "newest" one I've worked on is a '77.
EDIT: Ahh, I see what you're talking about. 78-79 switches have the bulb on a pigtail, not like in the picture I posted.....open mouth, insert foot.
Ok I removed the lower column cover (4 screws at bottom of dash) and up on top from the back is the shift light bulb. It's a 1445 bulb. And bingo I got lights. Thanks to all that helped.
