Hello, I am new to this forum and am also a new 6.0 owner. I just purchased a 2005 F-250 power stroke 4x4 crew cab Lariat. A friend of mine who is a diesel truck owner (Dodge) suggested that I upgrade the stock air intake/filter system which he said would increase hp as well as mpg. Any truth to this and if so any suggestions. I don't want to re invent the wheel with this truck by doing too many unnecessary or harmful up grades. Thanks
That is one of the very harmful up grades. The stock system is very well
engineered and to go with one of the aftermarket systems is asking for a new turbo
the dust and crap that gets around will dust your turbo and make a mess.
The stock system is got enough flow to make it to the 500 HP engines and then
after that point you can change it.
I'm trying to GET a stock air to replace the aftermarket that was installed when I bought the truck used. Anyone know where I can get one cheaper than what Ford will charge me? Thanks!

Yes. Check at a wrecking yard. If they don't have it, a lot of yards have a computer system where they can net work with other yards to find it. If not try Craigslist or the internet but be careful. Shipping charges could make it the same or more than if you went to the dealer.
Question has been answered i know but here's a good write-up with a little more info:
So why do "they" call it an upgrade?
Performance air filter and intake assemblies are a hot aftermarket item. In most cases using one simply means more noise, and more dirt going into your engine. At the dealer we have seen many filter systems changed and for the most part it is obvious that these performance filters offer less filtration evidenced by dirt found in the intake system and worn turbocharger compressor fins. Many of these filters require a coating of oil to aid in filtration. This oil gets sucked in with air flowing through the filter and contaminates Mass Airflow Sensors providing an excellent surface for dirt to stick to. In addition, some intake systems cause erratic airflow through the MAF sensor. Either condition can result in performance concerns or a Check Engine light. For most Power Stroke Engines the stock Donaldson filters are the best choice. In cases where the housings have become distorted or have been broken, the best advice is to replace with the original. We do recognize that the 7.3l PSD F-Series trucks had several filter assembly designs all of which had problems with housings breaking or poor sealing. For that we recommend installing a Motorcraft severe duty upgrade that uses the Donaldson filters.

I was in your position 3 years ago when i bought my 6.0, I bought an aftermarket air filter and it was the biggest waste of money. They don't provide more air flow over stock until your above 3600 rpms I believe. The aftermarket units do not filter dirt nearly as well as the stock filter which I proved to my self after checking the air intake tubing. My MAF sensor hates the AM filter, It makes it read hotter than it should which I've noticed fools with the boost and it actually decreased my MPG's. Stay away from a AM filter and spend the $200 something dollars on a good mod like a coolant filter or a scanguage II.
My AM Air Filter is for sale if you still want one lol
