Mini starter wtf!!!

Hello all,

I had to take off my headers over the weekend. And of course I had to deal with the pita starter. Before I put my header back on I am going to chance out my 100 pound starter :- I have been looking all over for a mini starter but all I can find are the ones to fit v8

Has anyone installed a mini onto their sixes? I'm hoping if I ever do find one that it will clear my headers. Thanks

I don't have an answer to this, but having switched over to the mini starter on the Ford 2.3 engine, I'd be interested in doing the same with the 4.9. I presume the same heavy, old-skool starter was used through the end of production in '96, yes? But did ALL production of the 4.9 stop in '96? What about the UPS trucks? Just wondering if the engine might have continued beyond '96 in any fleet or industrial application, where they might have provided some upgrades.

The SBF V8's and the 300 use the same starter. Just make sure you get one that matches your transmission ( Automatic or manual ) .

There is (or was) a company selling high-torque mini-starters on eBay that included starters for a 300.

Funny, I went looking for info on the mini (PMGR) starter for the 4.9 and found this thread I had posted in just about exactly 4 years ago. So for clarity, do the V8 (5.0, 5.8) and I6 (4.9) use the same starter? Starters are different for a manual vs. automatic, regardless of engine, yes? i.e. I can use a mini starter from a V8 manual on a I6 manual.

FYI about the PMGR starter upgrade:

The major starter cable is moved to the battery side on the Starter Relay/Solenoid.
And a new 10g wire (with maybe a fusable link) runs down to the small starter lug or terminal, and the other is wired to where the old starter wire was moved from.

Now it's a pretty big relay controlling a relay, which is how Ford did it until they switched in '97.

The starters used on the efi year trucks are smaller and bolt up, taking into account auto or manual.
