Need a starter for my 74 F-100, thinking of a mini starter
The starter on my 74 F-100 (390 V8) is starting to go, had to bump start it yesterday in order to get it going and it made a grinding noise once while trying to turn over (brand new battery). I have a set of Hedman Headers on it, and the starter is original. WHile there is clearance for the starter with the headers, its TIGHT. So I was thinking of a mini starter for a replacement. Anyone use one with their headers and which one is a good one?

I have a mini starter with a set of Hedman headers, but it's on a 300. Without the mini starter, I wouldn't be able to change the starter with the headers on. I have a Ford Racing brand mini starter, but in reality, most moderately priced mini starters are made by a single overseas OEM and re-branded here in the US (hence several different brands all look the same).
I think a mini starter is a great upgrade; you really do notice the difference. However, take care in wiring it properly. They must be wired per the manufacturer instructions, which means running a hot-at-all-times starter cable directly to the starter (which has its own solenoid mounted to it). Be very careful when routing this cable - if it melts to the headers, the battery may explode. There is common a trick some folks do to avoid the starter cable from being hot at all times, but it's highly unrecommended as the back EMF from the starter can grind it into the flywheel. Stick with the manufacturer's wiring instructions and take care to protect the wiring.
