I have a 79 swb column shift. I replaced the 302 not long ago with an 86 HO that I rebuilt. I matched the front balancer, but in the end the bell housing is too large to run the smaller diameter flywheel that the 86 HO takes. In other words my starter won't line up. Someone told me to try the same year flywheel for a truck and that didn't work because I'm still feeling a vibration at about 1600 rpm.
I want to keep the column shift. Is there anything I can do? Are there specialists out there that can balance the weight on the flywheel? Does an 86 bell housing bolt to the 79 3 spd transmission?
I think that was the same flywheel I had on it initially. I used the one from the old motor, then swapped to the newer model. When I cross reference the Windsor and the 302 it looks like the same one. Am I missing something?
You need a 50 oz. balance [164] tooth flywheel, not 28oz. which the 351 w is. Ford changed the 302 to 50 oz. in 81 ,but left the 351w at 28 oz. Been there and done that. I have a 85 302 in place of an older 302 and had to change to the 50oz.
I put an 84 302 in my 78 . I was always a gm guy. It drove me crazy finding the vibe . Finally an old ford guy set me straight . I had to change the flexplate and balancer to take care of it .
