hello everyone!
i am getting ready to put my 351C into my 76 f100. i have a 302 flywheel on the engine, the flywheel is from a 1977 302. my first question is: this flywheel is the correct year right? they didn't go to the other style until the 80's correct? second question: because the flywheel has the imbalance weight on it, does it have to be bolted on the flywheel a certain way? there is either 2 or 4 ways the flywheel holes will line up with the crank holes. i don't want to get it fully in the truck and find out that it has to be lined up a certain way. i normally line it up using the "7th" hole on the crank. there is the extra untapped hole that usually leaves a mark on the flywheel. i took the flywheel off and took it to the garage where the Cleveland lays, and find no marks on the flywheel from that other hole. so please help me! i have it mounted on the crank already, but i wanna make sure its correct before tightening it and installing the engine. i'd like to get it in the truck tommorrow (tuesday) so please help me asap someone! thanks
after about 2 hours of searching, i think i have answered this post. but please someone out there confirm. and please only confirm if you are 100% sure. i don't need any ifs ands or buts right now. it appears my 77 302 flywheel going on my 72 351c is the correct 28oz imbalance. also after reading some ads, it appears the flywheel will only bolt on 1 way?!? is this correct? i thought i spun it around and it lined up in a couple different spots, thats why i wanted to check first. i remember seeing 1 spot for sure that it wouldn't line up. i did drop it twice too. i have the flywheel mounted on the engine, i just haven't tightened it down yet, i wanted to be sure it was on correct. the engine is brand new and i don't want to start out messing stuff up when i get it running. thanks everyone.
there are a couple different flywheel diameters, there's a 164 tooth fly that measures about 14 1/4" and a 157 tooth fly, not sure on the diameter but it's smaller... the block plates are different also, the starter location changes to match the diameter of the flywheel. if you're using the same trans, blockplate and flywheel that came out of the truck, no worries. the flywheel bolts only fit in 1 position, and 1982 rings a bell for the change to 50oz?
thanks for the responses guys. i actually learned all of that stuff today, unfortunately. we have a small salvage yard, so i went and found another flywheel on an older 302. i didn't like the one thta came from the truck, it had a couple teeth that didn't look good. i put that flywheel on with the matching blockplate. i assumed they were the same. DON'T EVER DO THAT, HAHA. i got the engine down in the truck, put the 2 top bolts in place, then got out of the engine bay and started looking, and found the blockplate didn't cover the starter hole properly. i took it out and measured. the one that came from my truck was 14 1/4 inches, the other was like 13 and something. so i used my flywheel and blockplate and got the engine back into the truck. i also found out it does only mount in one place. i never new that. i have changed alot of ford engines, but all of mine had standard transmissions behind them, and i guess i never thought about it. i put them on, the lined up and i bolted them down.
so thanks for the responses anyway guys! now i just gotta get the rest of the cash i need to buy the misc. parts and it'll be ready to drive this summer.
