Bought a 79 F100 4x2 302, 3on a tree, blown motor. Bought 83 302 from Auotmatic Crown vic. Switchted it out, vibrated like crap. Old Flywheel wasn't balanced for new engine. Bought 10.5 inch flywheel to match newer engine and to solve vibration. Worked. Now, Starter won't reach the smaller flywheel. Any suggestions to fix the delima.
Note that this is a WOOD truck, not a show truck.
I'm ready to weld the blasted starter on!
More info to diagnose. I have the correct manual size starter. It's the distance that separate the teeth to keep them from meshing. The nose length is correct. Must I find an 11" flywheel that is correctly balanced to go with this "formerly automatic" engine? Do they make such a thing? Where do I get One?
F100,
If I'm not mistaken, the 302 is balanced using the flywheel, the crank, and the harmonic balancer. This means you can't just swap one part of the crank assembly to another. I got burned one time trying it on the harmonic balancer. There are people who can fix your problem and it will cost you less than $100. You will have to get on the phone and call around your area. You already own everything you need, you just have to find someone to balance it for you.

P.S. I believe this can be done with the block assembled.
I forgot the year that Ford went to the 50 oz. balance weight on the flywheel. I went through this when I put a late model 302 in an early Bronco. I got the flywheel and balancer off a 86 truck. Flywheel diameter was the same as the old flywheel. There used to be 157 tooth ring gears and 164 tooth before the balance change, were different diameters. I think Lakewood scatter shields were set up so you could use them on two different flywheels. Had both sets of starter motor holes drilled.
