Thanks, I was getting a little worried there (buyers remorse), but I think these will be fine. 1/2mpg isn't much to me but I understand how it could be..
I never even drove this truck in the snow or ice because the tires were so bad, but I do plan on getting them siped so that should help.
Been testing them the past few days, there's been a lot of snow on the ground here. Had a blizzard warning for the last day. They're ok but definitely slide around a lot, whenever I turn into a turn lane and come to a stop, for instance. Wants to kind of slide around until I come to a complete stop.
Starting to worry about going over the pass tomorrow or the next day, but with a set of chains hopefully I'll be ok. There's been two rollovers the last few days, one of them north of here and one on the pass I'm going over, both of them fatal and full size pickups. So I'm getting a little bit worried.
Kinda wishing I would have went with studded tires but what can ya do.. then in April I'd be wishing I had A/T's.
Drive within your limits, and leave plenty of braking distance and you'll be fine. ODOT does a very nice job of maintaining the pass, so the biggest concern coming up will be visibility - again adjust speed accordingly.
This morning's conditions were slick with anything less than studs, but totally manageable. Don't be in a rush to get anywhere, and try to stay away from those that are!
When possible, I like to leave early in the morning to drive over the pass so that there are not a lot of other cars. Stop at Sister's Bakery for a doughnut and enjoy the drive!
Thanks! In your experience would you recommend taking Santiam instead of Willamette pass? We were planning on Willamette but it looks pretty bad today on the live cam, plus so does 97 and we'd have to drive 50 miles down it.
Santiam is traveled on more, so I was thinking it might be in better shape.
In general, I would say yes to Santiam. If you are going to Eugene or further north, I think it is faster in just about any condition, but especially with the lower snow level making the section on hwy 97 nasty.
Depending on where your destination is, take 126 to Eugene/Springfield or 22 to Salem. Highway 20 over Tombstone Pass to Sweet Home is typically not maintained or traveled as much and I'd have a hard time recommending that way if you're feeling a bit white knuckled about the experience.
