That's nuts. He just got the module late August. Around $195 + $175 core.

So much for a cheap solution - lol.

IMO Ed rebuilds them better than new - has a very low failure rate. Having him do the repair/update is better than having a spare. That being said, I do have his updated FICM and a spare.

My neighbor drives from Northern Colorado to Las Vegas hauling cars and having a back-up just in case was his goal.

Pulling a burned out FICM and shipping it out while on I-70 in the middle of Utah isn't an option.

I hear ya. Just as an FYI to the forum community- Dorman now offers a cheap FICM half-shell (power supply board only) you can get at the Auto Parts stores in an emergency (around $260). I wouldn't get one unless I was stranded, but it is an option. Also, there are probably other components that have a higher probability of causing a break down than a FICMRepair.com rebuilt FICM.

I've seen that power supply from Dorman. How easy is it to replace in an emergency? I've never had to deal with a FICM or ever had one apart to know.

Try Ebay.
I have a FICM sitting on my tool box that
I got on Ebay for $200 and it is said to be a
good one.I am waiting on saving up a some
money to send the one in the truck to Ed and
will run on the spare for the time it's gone.
If it turns out the spare is bad I will send that
one in to Ed and get it fixed and then send the
one in my truck in for upgrading and Atlas 40.
I sort of spend my tool fund last week on a
Snap-on solus scanner. But this does mean
that I will have a Snap-on MT2500 for sale soon
that can work with up to at least an 06.

Seems Ed could have a good market if he supplied upgraded power supplies like that idea with Dorman. Plug-n-play without major down time.

In my crazy youth I was known to read a full novel in
one sitting. Can we say BOOK NUT. It's just the stories
were so good. Here is the kicker I still can do that with a
tech manual if I am in need of what I am reading.

Ed suggested to me when I had mine done to fabricate a heatshield. I read ed is working on an engineered heat shield. Has anyone tried a simple heat shield made out of many sheets of aluminum foil (10 sheets or more)? A heat shield with several air pocket layers is a good idea and it is maniputable, cheap and easy to form and tweak......ill be honest.....i did it. Not sure if it does anything but i can guarantee its better than nothing with the radiant heat off the engine. Sounds hokie but we'll see

I believe that people have tried heat shields, but they ended up blocking the air flow (reduced cooling) to the FICM and defeated the purpose of the heat shield. I believe Ed knows more about the heat shield attempts.

Well......not exactly. I had the FICM off and made several attempts and several mockups, I didn't just shove it under there and call it good. I formed a rectangular heat shield with mutliple layers trying to retain the air gaps in between the sheets. It is difficult to fabricate a heat shield without proper testing since the last thing I want to do is cut airflow. Although the conduction factor from the aluminum being in contact in some areas with the valve cover may contribute to heat transfer the remainder of the makeshift heat shield MAY have a benfit from the radiant heat or it may not do $h*t.....I'll never really know. It is a temporary attempt until I fabricate a beneficial piece or find a mass produced proven replacement. Personally since Ed does such a fine job with the HD upgrades of the internal components, I am thinking of just removing my hillbilly heatshield.
