Ficm relocation???

Just was thinking,,,,,, sometimes it's just wasted time, but if someone was to make extension cables (I know, lots of wires), would the drop in voltage from the extended wires be harmful. I'm sure someone out here could fab the wires. Just a thought.

It's not just a drop in voltage but also capacitance
of the wires. Because you have shielded wires that
carry the injector pulses in the mid frequency range
and by not using an engineered cable you will have
reflections that could cause problems. Now I understand
that the E-series did use a longer cable and maybe you could
use one to relocate the FICM. It just seems like a lot of
work for little if any gain. Don't the E-series also have FICM
problems? Some things you could do is improve cooling
by ducting cool air onto the FICM and better mounting
to lessen the vibrations and last you already know about
keeping your battery voltage in the happy range.
The easy to get cool air to the FICK would be to put
a jacket around it and force air into it. Look here
for fans and the tubing (called SCAT tubing) Avionics Cooling Fans
Avionics Cooling Fans aviation blowers - Lone Star Aviation

i had ed the ficm hero on the phone one night.....

and what he said about the E series is that he's only
had a few of them need to have the ficm gone thru.
a handful....

his exact words were.... "this probably isn't in my own best
interest, but the chance of your E series killing the ficm is
almost non existant. i've only had a few of them go bad.
if you really want to do a ficm, your best bet might be to
buy a ficm outright, and keep your original as a backup.
the chances of it going bad are very slim."

and it's on my list of things to do when the accounts
receivable zeros out a bit. a ficm outright, with 2 year
warranty and php flash is about $700 with the core,
so knowing it wasn't likely to grenade, gave me a bit
of a pause.

my long range plan is having in my onboard parts,
a working ficm, an AE on a netbook, a serpentine
belt, a set of fuel and oil filters, and the full version
of in-a-gadda-da-vida on the ipod, in case things get
really ugly.

Neat idea, (fan) where would you fit one of those in our crowded engine bays?

When I had my FICM repaired I discussed the possibility of fabricating a heat shield with Ed. My thought was to make a multiple layered shield with spaces between the layers for airflow that would fit between the valve cover and FICM. But after seeing how much room the connectors would require it didn't leave much " shield " left. Then I had the same thought as Sean and considered duct and a fan. I just happen to have two fans from an old PC tower that are 12 V. But like 2112 pointed out " where do you put them??????

If you do some looking around you will find some very small powerful
Avionics Cooling Fans. The down side can be the cost. But if you look
you can get an idea of how to make your own and use a small
muffin fan. There are a few places where you could sneak in
a package. Then with the SCAT tubing you can reach the FICM.

Wow, got some response outta that. I went to sleep last night. 3:18 Sean??!!?? U didn't huh lol.
I was just reading on eds website n thinking how bad it would suk to do all this n have a ficm bad hold me up. It was fine when I broke down. Which is crazy. I've never done anything to it.

Speaking of the on board arsenal, when I'm working I have a cac boot with both clamps, an extra Oreillys lifetime alternator (2 total), fuel filters, always a change of oil n filter, fuel injector, ipr valve, ipc sensor, it's a long story but I will now have 4 cam sensors, and 3 crank sensors (yup, that's 4 n 3, 2 of the cam are new lifetime auto zone, and same with the crank). And ae with the netbook. And the 06 service DVD. And all the hand tools I'm using now.

I wasn't sure about the potential new location of the ficm, can't remember, but if it fit, maybe next to the air filter in front of the fan???? Kinda opposite of where ipr puts their oc.

The VT275 engines have the FICM mounted outside behind the cab. Seems they figured the weather was less of a concern than heat and vibration.

Where is it located on the e series??? Wonder if getting the ficm harness for that would work? Well, it would have to have the e series engine harness also huh?

I'd love to have an extra ficm to ride with, 700 is pretty steep, but not if its a matter of driving, or riding on a tow truck. I need to get motivated about buying one.

Yeah the V6 version of the 6.0

Ours at work have been pretty solid. No EGR, oil cooler or FICM issues. They are cold blooded though.

Oh yeah there's a core. So figure just under $400.

My neighbor got a reman from Rock Auto for an emergency backup.
