I got a 1972 ford f-100 4x4 with a 360. I put new performance cam, rod and main bearings rebuilt cylinder heads. I get a engine noise at 35MPH or higher and also when i let off the gas but not at idle similar engine noise. Its not exhaust. Ive put 2 different oil pumps but no change. When I take the Valve covers off very little oil is coming out. Any suggestions will be very helpful.
Wow and engine can make many different noises, rods ,piston pins, lifers, ignition pings,
::But here's something, I'll just throw at you, I remember a guy that messed up this new 390 build many yrs ago. He forgot to install the cam face plate and the camshaft came forward enough and tore up the cam bearing journal. The old early Fe blocks used a spring and a button on it end to keep the cam from drifting forward. So tell us more is your noise a ping ,a banging , a tapping, a clicking or what is it sounding like other then a noise..orich
Oh did you have any little parts left over after putting the motor back in and up and running again? hope NO! :Okay whats your oil psi if your so worried to being low?? Can you get the engine to make the same noise while stopped and in park by just putting your foot on the gas pedal and bringing up the rpm's or only by driving it? Is your truck a manual or auto tranny? Some guys loose bolts and put one in a little longer one the flywheel that ends up hit the block. I guessing you put in the block/tranny spacer plate? When you chanced oil pumps did you find and little metal filing in the pan?? gee running out of the common things that would made a noise. And lastly what do you have your timing set at ??..orich
Truck is manual 4spd new timing gears are installed. However the fuel pump eccentric bolt seemed like it was going to break when i was trying to torque it down so its tight but not at torq specs. noise is at idle as well it does have a newer cluch months ago. The odd thing when i changed the oil pump the second time to a hp oil pump the oil pump didnt seem to look like any oil had gone through it. I manually tested it and it works fine on bench.
Are the fly wheel/clutch torqued to spec? Throwout bearing installed correctly?
How come you installed oil pumps? Do you have a pressure gauge or a dummy light? I have run across a situation where the machine shop did not install oil galley plugs which I only caught after wiping out two brand new cam's...
