I completed this project last weekend. It wasn't too difficult just time consuming. The worst part was getting the axles out. I tore up the outer seals getting them out but I had bought new ones to replace so it was ok.
Glad to hear you got it fixed! I've always been nervous to do work on an axle because I'm not certain I could get everything in there just right. I've seen stories about folks with trashed gears because the shop didn't get things right.
I'm willing to figure anything out to save me BIG money. I saved around $700 doing it myself. It took three of 6-1/2 hours to complete. For anyone who ever taclkes this the tools you need is well worth the money!!!
I had a drip on the front passangers side also when I first purchased my X, never really leaked much but there was a droplet waiting to fall off for about 2-3 weeks. Fluid never went down, so it wasn't leaking while driving. The drop went away and and now is always dry but I keep my eye on it. The PO of the X was a builder and the X sat for a couple years when the building market went to crap. Guess that front seal got dry, but I think my driving it all the time may have gotten the seal lubed back up causing it to stop leaking. But as with everthing it is probably just a matter of time and I will need to replace it also. May be giving you a shout at that time to see if there are any afterthoughts you may have had about the replacement
Treker58, Anytime! Like I said previously it is not hard just time consuming. You will need at least two people especially when you get to the point of removing the carrier from the differential. That thing is HEAVY!!! I did have alittle problem getting the axles out due to the seal around them. I would recommend to anyone to buy new outer seals because I tore mine up getting them out.
Yes, you will need an Inner Seal Press tool and the tool to install the Outer Seals on the Axle and you use that same tool to hammer the drive shaft back into the knuckle housing.
Yes my inner seals did. The outer seals were probably ok but I tore them up getting the axle out. I could have purchased an axle puller but I did not want to spend any more money on tools.

Congrats on the job! Doing it yourself always saves a bunch of money.
