I drive a 2000 Ford F250 5.4 and my front axle is leaking on both sides
My passenger side needs both seals replaced and the driver side seals look good(since they were replaced about 8 months ago), but the dust seal(the easy one to put on) is just hanging there.
So I'm wondering if the dust seal is why it's leaking? And also how many seals are on each side of the axle?
That dust "seal" is about as effective as an umbrella in a hurricane, but it won't cause a diff fluid leak. In the ford manual I see one seal on each side of the differential. If you have fluid coming out of both axle tubes, then it's gotta be both those seals.
If you have fluid coming out your axles, it is either your differential seals or way too much fluid in the case. No reason at all for fluid to be in the tube.

Is there a seal in the tube(the tube would be the two sides that come from the housing right?)....?
But I bought a seal from the Ford dealership a while back and the name on it was "Oil Seal" but around the internet I've seen it called a "Knuckle Seal" for obvious reasons that it's in the knuckle.
Basically, are there two or three seals on each side of the front axle? Because I've read something that said there was a seal at the beginning of the tube, by where the axle housing is.
And the fluid level has always been good. Right now it is a little low since I can see fluid sprayed all under the truck.
Moving outward from the differential itself: Inner axle shaft oil seal (only accessible by removing the diff gears), Dust seal (visible at the end of the tube), Axle shaft main seal (Knuckle seal). The Inner seals are the only ones that keep the fluid in.
i have a leak as well, from your description it appears to be the innear axle seal because the leak is just past the knuckle on the differential iteself and drips down from there. cant see it dripping just a giant black oily stain... does anyone have instructions on replacing the inner seal? for a basic DIYer is it even worth trying? what does fluid leak cause? where is the fluid level check on a 99f250 superduty? any help is greatly appreciated, thanks
i just replaced the inner axle shaft oil seal, dust seal on axle shaft and axle shaft to knuckle seal(vacuum seal). My truck is a 03 f350 with 6.0L. 4:10 gear ratio for the front. i have the seal numbers if needed. let me know
im told it is the pinion seal, that its leaking or 'weeping'. if you have DIY instructions i would love to know, or at least a part number and i can get the part and have a buddy do it. any help is awesome, thanks
also to do the job let me know if you need to know how.
i am new to the forum but i was wondering if you could let me know how you replaced the differential seal and if there were special tools required? Im trying to determine if i should tackle this myself or let someone do it.
there is no seal for the diff cover, just use rtv. pinion seal, you just need a socket to remove the yoke. then a screw driver/chisel with a hammer should pop it out. then a seal installer that fits the new seal would be the only real special tools you'd need
