hard to start when hot

My 77 starts quick(turns over) when it has sat for a while or is cold. However, once you warm it up it does not want to crank. It is very slow to nothing but it eventually spins fast enough to start. I did notice the + cable to the solenoid has melted a cpl inches by the solenoid. The cable to the starter is fine. So what do you all think could be the problem? Weak battery, bad cable, bad or going bad solenoid, bad starter? Could there be an engine problem? Thanks.

Put a timing light on it and see where it's set. Might be too much initial timing.

Another possibility is your starter is heating up and binding. This can be a problem when it's next to the exhaust pipe.

The timing was at 10 and now at factory spec 12. Did it at 10. The exhaust was dual and it seemed the starter was plenty clear. Put headers on this weekend so the exhaust is closer now. Did it before this. The starter looks like it has been replaced recently. Still clean lol.

Agreed, sounds like advanced timing or heat soak. You'll want to find out why the battery cable is melted near the solenoid - check for arcing when you turn the engine over.

Sounds like your starters heating up. Mine did the exact same thing a while ago. Started up perfect when it was cool, but when the starter got heat soaked it would barely turn the engine over.

Headers are probably the reason for that problem. You can buy heat wraps to wrap the starter, that might help it.

When I had this problem it ended up beaing a weak battery. But as stated already, check your timing as it could have too much initial, check all of your connections, and check the starter.

This morning I took my 6mo old battery out of my 07 F150 and put it in the 77. It acted the same so that ruled out the battery. Next thing to check were the battery cables. Like I said before the + to the soleniod was melted and the other wires there were badly coroded. I took the cable off and realize it is 4 guage. Kinda tiny. The - cable had a quick fix terminal on it that was a mess so I went and bought all new 2 guage cables. Even came with protective covers. I cleaned the + terminal on the solenoid and all the supply wires and put on the new cables. I turned the key and it was like a new truck! Started "right now!" I drove it today running errands and it started every time with no delay. Best $20 I've spent in a while.

I've recently noticed the same problem- if I'm driving for a few hours, turn the engine off, it is very hard to re-start. The starter cranks very slowly at first, eventually kicking in.

The cable looks fine- I'll pull it to check for corrosion. But what gauge is typically fine for that application? I thought 4g would be fine?

Also, my start is very close to the headers- about 2-3 inches clearance in some spots. I assumed this is why it was over heating. Any recommendations on a heat shield to install to protect it? I haven't found anything on Summit that would work.

Thanks for the advice.

Look for a starter blanket from summit. It wraps around and is secured with velcro and straps. I have one on my f150 and on my fairlane.
