I have a 1985 F250 351W manual transmission. In the last few months I have had trouble starting the motor when it is hot. Started cold it fires up quickly. After driving it 20 or 30 minutes if I stop the engine it will not restart. When the key is turned the solenoid clicks and the starter motor will sound like it will turn and sometimes turns very slowly. If I let the truck set for 25 or 30 minutes it will start up correctly. I noticed the last time I tried to start it hot (and it didn't) the big cable from the solenoid to the starter got pretty hot. The battery is OK we checked the voltage.
Anybody got an idea what is going on ans how to fix it. Thanks
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Mar-02 AT 00:00 AM (EST)]Mine did this, but not to that extreme of a point. I replaced the spark plugs and it fixed it. But them my plugs were really bad. I also replaced the battery wires and it helped. I've talked to mechanics about it though, and they all say either the relay solenoid or the starter. when the starter gets hot, the bearing bind up and don't turn correctly. U might want to try the starter. Or the soleniod. But if anyone has any others suggestions, i'de like to hear em too. mine still does it alittle, but no where near like his. it's just a bit annoying! laterz!
U might also want to ohm out all the wires between the starter and the battery to see if any of them are bad. the hot wire might be a bad wire. If u're battery cables are old and corroded u might want to replace them anyways.
Do you have headers? These can cause the starter to get hot and not work correctly.
Do you have an exhaust leak near the starter? This could also cause the starter to overheat.
Try retarding the timing a little. If it's too advanced, it can cause to much of a load on the starter. I say try this first, because it's cheap. If it doesn't work, set the timing back where it was.
HAHA..i do have a stupid leak where the air pump hose goes into the Cat. converter. I patched it last spring with that liquid steal stuff, because we couln't get under there to weld it. I want to just rip the hose out of the converter and weld a seal over it. Or even just finish out my Cali. Duals to True duals...a friend said he'd do it for like $80. then i wouldn't have the leak. It's just a pin hole leak, but enough that i see smoke on really cold days..though it's just a little. What is a good way to weld Catalytic converters? i don't think u can wire feed them can u? I might put it back up on our lift in auto class and put some JB weld on it and see if it holds...last time i used some generic Carquest crap!! maybe JB will work better. any suggestions on fixing it?
