I'm looking to set the timing on my '86 6.9L diesel woth the banks turbo... I've been doing some research on the tools out there... I foind the one that screws in place of the glowplugs, but as I inderstand these can be off by as much as 10%. I found the Ferret tool that acts as a trigger for a regular timing light, which is pretty awesome. And I found the Time Trac tt1000....
I blew a bunch of money on my truck initially, so i'm feeling pretty cheep... These tools are almost all over $200, which seems like alot to blow on it considering how infrequently it is likely to be used....
Are there any tools out there that are $100 or less, while still being usefull? I understand it's possible to do it by ear, but I don't have a good ear for such things... I can tell when something is wrong, but not when it's right...
Timing by ear is nothing more than guessing. I had both my trucks timed by ear, and when I got my feret I was off in both directions -2* and +3* The feret works great, but don't forget you also need a timing gun, preferably a digital one with tach and advance features, but it is pretty easy to use. I have not heard of anything in the 100 dollar range to time with.
Maybe get an assistant to hold the camera though... I got a bit of a blair witch project headache going on
I hear ya Adam, but advil is way more in the budget than an assistant, I got no friends man! LOL. Those vids were supposedly fixed by youtube too, imagine how bad the originals are! Maybe I need a couple cocktails first to calm the nervs... Yeah that's the ticket!!!
You should see what I use as a camera mount when I'm not holding it, I'll hafta get a pic up.
BTW thanks felix, I'm not really the social networking type, but sometimes it is a good thing!

Yup, saw that video in my search for information... Pretty kool stuff
My assistant! How's that for some redneck engineering! Hey at least he doesn't steal my beers! This presented another conundrum...How do you take a picture of the camera you use to take pictures??? Camera phone!
