I'm driving my wife's sons super duty until mine comes in. A 6.0
Is it common for these things to crank for 3-5 seconds before starting? This one does...
Thats normal. 5 seconds is a little long, but if the glow plugs are weak or there is slight compression loss it could happen. 3-5 wouldnt worry me too much.

It's a 6.0...be thankful it starts at all

I know he's been round and round with that one, and that's a lot longer than it takes mine to fire up. I don't know that it's too long though. Oil may need a change.

3-5 is longer than the 2 6.0s in my neighborhood take to start as well. But I dont think its a severe problem. Like Steve said.. Oil?

Thanks guys.
It does start and runs good, just not used to holding the starter engaged for so long.
Won't have a clue where to look if it ever fails to start tho.
Really? Needing an oil change will make the diff? I did notice that he is due for a oil change.
Carry on!

It can make a little difference. After the oil's been hammered by the high pressure oil pump for a few thousand miles the viscosity breaks down, and if that's the case it could be taking just a bit longer to build enough injection pressure for the PCM to tell it it's OK to fire the injectors.

Yep, that engine likes to break down oil and make it very thin. Since the motor uses the oil to push the fuel into the cylinders, weak oil can mean weak fuel.

Also, depending on what brand, weight, length of time, etc it could definitely do it.

Next time you cold start that 6.0, check the crank time with your watch. It is normal for it to need to crank while the injection control pressure builds. But 3 seconds is pretty long. On the other hand, 1 second often feels like 3 seconds when you're holding the ignition.

The 6.0 cranks just about as long as a 7.3 when everything is AOK.

Hate to say it, but extended crank time is often an early symptom of a high pressure oil leak. I've been through that deal.

G'evenin', all.

In Clinton, OK tonight, just a few miles east of Elk City.

Saw some baskets today, Steve. Missed an eastbound-44 turn today when 44 took a hard right, and ended going around Tulsa on the south side on the Creek Turnpike. Yup, they are unmanned, and exact change is required, just like all the others. However, there was a change machine at the second one into which I stuck an Abe-note only to find a real fistful of coins in the tray. Since we hit T-town around rush hour, it probably was a fortuitous missed turn. We were in OKCity about 1800, so we decided on the Kilpatrick instead of downtown, so there were two more tan baskets to finish off the pile.

We're gonna' stop in Payson to meet Robin (PaysonPSD), and then we're going on down to my sister's in Tucson for an evening. Probably Thursday evening, then on in on Friday.

Whew! October already!

No such thing as a wrong turn when you're not in a hurry

Give Robin my best, wouldja? Got to meet him a couple years ago at the drags in Phoenix. Super guy.

At last months Cruise Night SPPD was out doing demonstrations with two of their dogs. Had to clear half a block around em to make sure the dog went after the officer with that arm guard and not the crowd. Definitely an impressive display, those dogs are quick and one of them did not like to give the guy his arm back.

Port Hueneme had a similar demo at their Hueneme Days in August.

Those dogs are not mean at all by nature, just EXTREMELY well-trained!

The dog would never go after anyone at random in the crowd. He KNOWS who the "bad guy" is.
