truck problems

I have a 1988 f150 4.9 4x4 lately since goin off road even in 2wd my truck torques and pops when turning in either direction...sometimes driving it randomly starts clanging till I slow down to a stop and pops and it goes away I'm not really sure what it could b no visible damage under truck ugh driving me nuts

Automatic or manual locking hubs?

Have you checked your axleshaft joints and hub?

Automatic hubs unfortunately I been looking into manuals heard a lot of problems with auto not disengaging

And the automatics are probably what your problem is.

Sounds like a bad u-joint in one of the axle shafts to me. The hubs won't cause it bind and pop.

If the hubs are unlocked, how would the axle be turning in 2WD?

I say bad u-joint, and stuck hub if the axle really is turning.

4x4ford88, the auto hubs are known to stick both ways (stuck engaged, stuck disengaged) but I've never had one fail to unlock yet... my problem is usually that the #$@*(#! thing won't lock up in reverse! All it takes is one of them to fail...even if the other one still works, you're basically 2WD at that point.
