I bought a new Brake Pedal Switch but once I install it, I can't return it. My shifter is pretty sloppy - presumably from the previous owner cranking on it trying to get it in gear. Can anyone tell me if the solenoid in the column is prone to failing, when its been cranked on? Any way to check it? If not, I'll fire in this new switch and hope that does it. Thanks

The statement highlighted in bold red leads me to believe you either have the two Torx bolts at the base of the column shifter tube loosened off, only needing to be tightened, and/or the shifter tube bushings themselves have worn out completely, requiring tube, shaft and bushing replacement which are very common.

Thanks for the reply. I guess i need to tear into that steering column then. For now, I'll keep the brake pedal switch in the box. Thx again.

You don't need to tear into the column. The two bolts can be accessed without removing anything. They are near the floor, you need to look back up the column from the floor to see them. They are Torx head bolts.

Thanks for the reply Mark. I'd popped apart the column before seeing your reply. Wasn't too difficult, and needed a good cleaning in there anyway. When I didn't find anything loose, i decided to just plug in the new brake pedal switch and it seemed to fix the problem. I'll check into the tube/shaft/bushings as you suggest to tighten up the shifter before it fails, when I have a chance.
THx again.
