Help please!!! I have an 04 F250 CC 6.0 FX4 auto tranny. When I am in park with the engine running, I have to push the brake pedal all the way to the floor to get the gear lever to shift into any gear. The problem has been there for a while but is getting a lot worse. It is now to the point that I worry about not being able to get it out of park at all.
It sounds like your brake lamp switch is going bad. Have someone stand behind you and push down on the brake pedal. The stop lamps should come on as soon as you start pushing---about 1/4". If they don't come on until you are pushing with all your might, get the switch replaced. By the way, if you just turn the ignition switch 1 notch clockwise from the "lock" position to the "off" position, you should be able to shift out of park without stepping on the brake pedal.

Very good point, i was stuck in park when my brake switch went out and thats the only way i got it outta park
Crappy connection somewhere in the circuit. Check out the connections looking from corrosion and other defects. I'd post the diagram but can't figure out how to do it. anyone able to help? In the meantime I'll PM it to you.
The brake lights light up every time with minimal pedal pressure , any other suggestions?

=================================
Hi again Paul,
I just looked at my 03 wiring manual, and discovered something. The brake lamp switch has 2 sets of contacts. One set controls the brake lamps, and the other set controls the power to the shift interlock and various other circuits. Look at the brake pedal---The switch should be mounted to the pedal at the top, and have a connector with 5 wires attached to it. If that's what you have, then replace the switch--The contacts for the shift interlock have gone bad. If & when you remove the switch, take note how everything goes together--It can be confusing reassembling it.
Someone posted (a long time ago) that if you have a bad shift interlock, you can still get the truck out of park by turning the switch only one position forward (the position that unlocks the steering wheel, but doesn't turn-on any accessories). Then, apply the brake, move the shifter to neutral, then start the truck.
I don't know if it works, but it may get you going until you can resolve the issue.
That does work. Ron tipped me off to that little trick and Dave is getting me a diagram so I don't screw anything up. Replacing the relay is first on my weekend project list.
I'm sure it would be easy to do, but I wouldn't recommend it. It does serve a very good purpose, especially when there are children around. Even if you don't have children, you may sell it one day on the next owner may have them. I don't see any benefit of bypassing it.
If you have a truck that moves on it's own (i.e. w/o throttle) enough to actually go somewhere, when you put it into gear, you've probably got something wrong. Even the torque from an idling PSD isn't enough to get mine to move more than a couple of inches. None of my vehicles have ever generated enough driveline torque at idle to move the truck more than an inch or two.
This is a feature to protect Ford from sue-happy owners, not any kind of actual truck problems.
