2004 6.0 Automatic sometimes will not go into gear

This truck is a friend of mine's. 2004 6.0 diesel 4wd Automatic Stock 225,000 miles on the truck. Sometimes the truck will not come out of park when putting into Drive or Reverse. If he steps on and off the brake a few times it eventually goes into gear. It does not happen all the time....just sometimes. I don't know if it is a linkage problem in the column, electrical Brake Pedal Position switch or maybe something to do with a brake Pressure Sensor. I am open to ideas.

My SWAG is the brake light switch. That triggers the solenoid that releases the shift handle.

Electrical switch in the cab on or near the brake pedal master cylinder operating rod or the pressure switch in the engine bay on or near the master cylinder? Thank you.

Mark is referring to the switch connected to the actual brake pedal itself inside the cab, the one that activates the exterior brake lights when the pedal is depressed, as well as provides an input to the PCM.

Thank you for the confirmation. I will advise James as to what to check. I did tell him that for over 200k he has been doing very well with his truck. Maybe he will just go ahead and purchase a new switch. Any ideas on part number for this item from ford. I will see if I can find it on Tousley ford parts website.

Yes, I meant the switch on the top of the brake pedal.

I'm having similar trouble with my shifter being stuck in Park. When it started happening a few months ago I opened up the Brake Pedal Switch and cleaned it up with a wire brush and contact cleaner. There was some corrosion present. Looked like new going back in. It seemed to help for a while, but now its doing it again and the contacts in the switch are still squeaky clean. I bought a new Brake Pedal Switch but once I install it, I can't return it. My shifter is pretty sloppy - presumably from the previous owner cranking on it trying to get it in gear. Can anyone tell me if the solenoid in the column is prone to failing, when its been cranked on? Any way to check it? If not, I'll fire in this new switch and hope that does it. Thanks
