I was driving home on interstate last night and all of the sudden my 2002 F250 7.3L jerked a bit and seemed to be very sluggish the engine light came on, I slowed down and limped home ( 8 miles ) on back roads at first i thought tranny but not so sure. This a.m. I started it up no engine light I reversed when I put in drive it stalled out. I put in neutral restarted and reved up seemed fine when I put in drive it died again. I am fairly new to this can you give some advise on what to look at first etc. thanks
The place to look first is what codes were stored when the check engine light came on. That will tell you where to start. Without the codes just start buying parts and hope you get lucky.
Thanks for reply I checked codes this am I am getting 2 1 is the Cam Positioning sensor the other one relates to a fuel injector. I think I should with replacing the Cam Sensor, however if my memory serves me right there was a recall for this which I had taken in and had replaced about 3-4 years ago. I did notice that oil level was extremely low so i took care of that do you think the cam sensor is best place to start thanks
Probably the CPS like you had mentioned. Causes lots of problems in these trucks, i know many people that carry a spare in their glovebox because its very easy to change
O.K Thank you..... Question I have read on the web that the CPS sold at retail Auto parts stores ( ie Oriely Advance Auto etc) are junk ( I personally haven't had any problems with items I have purchased for my other vehicles). do you think so as well if so and can you recommend a mfg or site to purchase a good one or am i just reading garbage. Thanks
There used to be everyones favorite, the "black" CPS (because its color was black), but that is now pretty much out of stock everywhere, or on ebay for 10 times what its worth. You can get a CPS from one of our site sponsors, Riffraff Diesel Performance Parts | Ford 7.3 diesel | 7.3 powerstroke | Ford Powerstroke | 7.3L Powerstroke Parts, that would work just fine. Clay would be more than happy to answer any questions you might have, he knows a lot when it comes to these trucks and the parts he sells.
