Hi Mark, question for you. I located a rip in the cac tube, have corrected that, engine runs fine, revs up ok, shifts well, down shifts normal, wrench light off. The only issue is when the revs and boost go go up and truck downshifts under moderate or higher pressure(thats the only way I can discribe it sorry)I hear a whiring noise maybe slightly grinding hard to say, I can tell where its coming from as it happens when i step on it at 50 mph and up. I notice a drip of tranny fluid from one of the pan bolts, have wiped it dry and its coming from under the bolt head, bolt is tight, gasket was replaced end of May 2012, when filter and fluid were changed, bolt WERE torqued to spec. Any ideas? Even tho it shifts normally and temp on gauges is normal, I think I am looking at a trans problem.
I thought I'd ask you seeing you have dealt with tranmissions.
Thanks
Did you use a cork gasket or a thin rubber gasket? Those are the gaskets that come with a new filter. Either of those will leak. The only gasket to use is the reusable gasket that the truck came with. Anything else will leak.
Upon further invesigation, drained fluid from tranny pan, smells just like fluid I drained when I changed it in May, no metal filings etc in pan, noise seems to be turbo related, tested on highway, when boost gets to about 11 psi you can start to hear slight "grrrrr" gets louder at 12 and up, doestn't seem to matter what the revs are, altho I haven't taken it above about 20 psi, question is can I drive it like this for a little while, I use it for service and I can't rent a van for a few days.
Sorry - IMO it is impossible to answer that without knowing more.
It would really be adviseable to have the codes read - most likely the dealership is your best bet there.
Maybe you could pull the turbo inlet tube off and see if there is too much axial and radial movement in the wheel. Maybe also check the downpipe for oil.
I'll try to have the codes read, fluid is Ford Mercom LV. which according to every dealer ship I've called is what they now replace the original with.
Can't remember what the owners manual said....Mercon 3?? Other parts suppliers wanted to sell me all kinds of fluid, some of which I've seen on this site weren't compatable, So I went with the Dealership supplied, nobody and I mean nobody I called could supply the original.
I kept the old gasket and reinstalled it no leaks now.
