No start after heavy rain.....

Details of the truck in my signature. It's getting fuel in the carb (visual), it's turning over fine, and it ran great when I turned it off the other day..... but it's been pouring for 2 days, and now I turn it over, and don't get so much as ONE POP.

This happens every time it rains hard, but never to this degree, where the truck is unstartable. Usually it just misses alot, and as soon as it warms up, we're fine. It rarely sits this long, unstarted, in the rain though.

I'm sure it's an electrical problem, but what electrical problem could it be??

This is with the hood down, latched.

Thanks for any help, AleX

Distributor cap is probably full of moisture, wipe it out and spray with WD-40

Wish I could say you nailed it, but just checked, it's dry in there, and no change.

Next time it won't start, check for spark. Whether or not you have spark will determine what to look at next. And, most importantly:

Careful with this way of thinking. You can't be sure of anything until you know what the problem is, but if that were the case, you would go ahead and fix it. So for now, assume you're not sure of anything.

I had the same problem.
Changed the ignition module and slapped some dielectric grease in the connections and problem gone.
Could be a couple of reasons there but, problem solved.
At first I checked under the cap and no condensation, figured the next thing that could be bothered by the wet would be a module that lost its seal. They get pretty hot.
Not saying that's your problem but....
Good luck

FMC, correct, I shouldn't have said I'm sure, as I'm not. I've corrected people on the same thing, you're absolutely right.

I just PB Blastered the whole cap, and all the plugs, and it immediately made a difference, I got the usual pops. Now I'll wait to let the engine unflood itself, and I'll go from there.

I think my best bet would be some of that conductivity grease. My whole truck needs it, from lights to this stuff, I've just got to get in the habit of using it.

If the Outside of the cap is dirty it will act up when it rains. Wash the top of the cap with detergent.

The cap will also develop minute carbon traces that will conduct when wet. I experienced this personally. If cleaning the cap helped, I suggest replacing the cap.

I had the same problem a while back, turned out to be the solinoid. It wasn't putting the full voltage out to the ignition in start. Most of the time it didn't bother it but in high humidity it needs the extra voltage to get it running.

Well it's rolling again. I'm gonna grease everything I can and go from there, if need be.

Thanks for sharing the experiences.

I would dry all the PB off the cap and everything and if you dont think it needs replacing, spray it with a silicone spray to keep it dry. A bad cap or rotor will make the truck run like crap
