On my 83, f150, 5.8L 4x4, rain has gotten into the carb due to a faulty hood cowl. I've tried starter fluid directly into the carb while the missus is cranking it, a small amount of gas in the carb, and now I'm letting it dry out. Still won't turn over and occasionally backfires while attempting to start it. Any suggestions?
Apparently it is turning over, but it won't start? If I am right, take one of the sparkplugs out and see what it looks like. If it's very dark and wet and smells like fuel, the plugs are fouled. You can try to pull them and dry them out, but sometimes you have to get new ones.
Perhaps rain also found its way into electrical components? Remove the distributor cap and look for moisture. Also, check inside the spark plug boots plus any of the many electrical connections leading to the distributor or ignition module.
